Mantel throws Michelle Simmons to the ground during afternoon training with Coast Guard Judo, a United States Judo Association registered Judo club at Training Center Yorktown, Va. Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008. A flawless execution of this technique in competition would result in ippon, or instant win. (U.S. Coast Guard Photo/Petty Officer 3rd Class Mark Jones) On 22 August, 2009 BOSN Pete Mantel earned 3rd place at the World Master's Judo Match in Atlanta, Georgia.  Mr. Mantel has been leading the Coast Guard Judo Club for five years here at Training Center Yorktown.  Membership in the club has not required a fee or even a military I.D. card.  Dedication and commitment, and a positive attitude have been the dues.  In addition to representing us at the Master's, the club members have earned medals at the local, regional, state, and National level.  One, possibly more, members show significant promise for the Olympics.  That is - Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty in action.  Congratulations Bosn Mantel.  Thank you for efforts, you make us all proud to call you brother.  What do you say; maybe just one more match?

NOTES FROM June 2009 MEETING

 

1. On Tuesday, 9 June, 2009, Yorktown Chapter CW&WOA President called the meeting to order at 1130 held at Port of York.

2.  Members in attendance:

 3.  Previous minutes.  Minutes from the May meeting were not reviewed or approved.

 4.  Treasurers Report. (Filed under separate report)

 5.  President's Report.

            a.  President called to our attention the Chiefs Mess would like us to provide them with our

            Official Liaison for future joint sponsored events. CWO Myers thought a great

            opportunity and volunteered to act as our liaison.

  • b. President called to our attention the Portsmouth/Norfolk chapter would be interested in holding meetings with the Yorktown chapter and possibly working together in future events.
  • c. President called to our attention the CWO Breakfast with the CO has been rescheduled for 0715 on 25 June 2009. 

6.  Old Business.

  • a. CWO Carriere working on the logo for shirts and price markup of items.

 7.  New Business.

  • a. The CWO Breakfast with CO has been rescheduled to 25 June 2009 at 0715.
  • b. Consider TCY 50 Year Celebration for 10 July 2009. Anticipate including a CWOA coin in the new time capsule.
  • c. John Crisano and CWO Whitney Jones will man a table for Spring Fling with others devoting an hour to assist with this. Tickets will be sold until 11 June for those purchasing tickets late.
  • d. Discussed how to advertise the link to sell items from the YCWOA site.
  • e. CWO Carriere passed info discussed from the May CWO National Convention. Some topics mentioned were membership in the National CWOA, spending limits, criteria for distinguished member nominations, the new members voted in, etc.

Basketball tournament got underway, the Chief Warrant Officers joined in to support the event by selling Chili Dogs and Hot Dogs to the large crowd of spectators.  Starting at 1100, the CWO's manned the window until 1800 that night.  This type of event not only gives the CWOA an opportunity to be seen as a whole, but the chance to raise funds to give back to the Training Center and local community.  The food was great, the games were close and the spirit was very high!

Through out the day, the warrants stood watches cooking, serving and cleaning all the while having a great time.  This year, TRACEN Yorktown MLK Tournament included 14 Coast Guard teams from the surrounding area and as far south as Florida, north from Boston, the Midwest from Detroit and the Gulf Coast from New Orleans.  It was a great time to get out and see some old friends and meet some new ones.

Greetings; the Yorktown Chief Warrant Officer Association has come up with guidance to assist persons interested in the Chief Warrant Officer Appointment process.  The application process for appointment to Chief Warrant Officer-2 (W-2) is very competitive, only packages that reflect top performers (E-6 through E-9) in their rating specialty are considered.
